Happy New Year to you all!

— I found this so encouraging: This past Thanksgiving and Christmas, we helped the Salvation Army/Jewish Federation prepare the Salvation Army’s annual luncheon (which we’ve been doing for a number of years, as I said last Holiday season). Part of the Christmas crew this past time were a group of co-workers. Their place of employment pays them for 8 hours of community volunteer service, and they chose the luncheon. I wish ALL employers did this. What a seed to sow: 8 hours of your employee’s time (that you are paying for) being given to another organization. That is wonderful!!! I have also seen organizations (like banks, even military) coordinate a day for all (or a portion) of their employees to volunteer with a nonprofit. These things bless my heart so much. Adventures in Food: The 40 Cents No-Knead Bread was a wonderful addition to our Christmas meal, as well as the Christmas Fruit Salad. Really great choices, and I’ve also made a whole wheat version of the bread now. I combined several techniques from past blog posts for the whole wheat. I’ll update you when I’ve tested them a few more times. Less formal pic of panettone waffles from the day after Christmas (no time for fancier pics from Christmas brunch):

These were so good, I can’t even tell you. You have to be a person that loves citrus zest, though. I made a ton of candied orange and lemon peel in November, hoping it would last through the Holidays. It did. I tried to keep these a little healthier by making whole grain waffles, homemade non-fat yogurt replacing the oil. They were a little sweeter than I would normally prepare, though. I also soaked the dried fruit in hot water & vanilla vs. rum. I ran out of most of my homemade sprouted flours, otherwise I would have used them. For Christmas brunch, I actually made a vanilla yogurt sauce, but there’s just a dollop in this pic. When I feel like indulging, maybe I’ll go for regular white flour waffles topped with whipped cream and syrup, rum soaked fruit. More time, maybe sourdough or yeast waffles. The fruit soaked for about 10 minutes (while I prepared the batter), about 3-4 minutes each waffle. So, I think this was a fab shortcut for panettone flavors. You just have to make sure you work quickly to evenly distribute the fruit and peel (once the batter hits the iron). Not waiting for the Holiday season to roll around again to prepare these!

For New Year’s, I switched up the cherries to blackberries for the individual Pavlovas with Red Wine Compote and Mascarpone Whipped Cream. The blackberries were fresh, and the cherries would have been frozen. This was just a test one (to see how the layering looked), so I used yogurt in place of mascarpone:

Again, these were delish (made them for Thanksgiving, as well)! As I made individual portions (instead of the original larger size), I cooked them for a longer time at a lower oven temp. Sweet Potato Bites & Sweet Potato Cakes with Black Bean Salsa were also delightful, and I’m looking forward to making more of the potato recipes soon. Leftover ‘Bites’ filling made nice veggie burgers!

Saw a recipe for pea guacamole in a 20-year-or-so-old diet cookbook. I didn’t make it according to the directions, but I enjoyed it. I just mixed pico with pea puree. Nice, lighter guac variation. I told you I was on a potato kick, so I baked wavy chips instead of my normal tortillas. Remember my portion control tip about spooning your dip onto your plate (instead of dipping into the bowl)!

I must say I love so many diet books I’ve come across over the years. Even if I do not follow the actual diet itself, they usually have a few good recipes in them (or recipe inspirations). I especially love older books as many of them use common, simple ingredients (and, they’re usually a bargain at second-hand stores). I would think it could be frustrating to “go on a diet” that sends you off to purchase trendy, spendy ingredients, lol. This book only seemed to have a couple of items that were not that common 20 or more years ago.

Great posts to revisit for the New Year: 7 Detox Smoothies with Added Health Benefits, 32 Detox Smoothies (includes juices and teas), and Hydrating Vitamin Refreshers (waters). I love water regardless, but adding fruit, etc., makes it so much more fun (to look at, as well as drink). After the water is gone, I add the fruit to a smoothie. I just try to use whatever I already have around the house (or am planning to use in another dish). The past couple of days I had cranberries, blackberries, citrus, ginger, and chiles:

I told you my co-worker tipped me to make my pitcher/carafe in the morning. At least one more refill, and I’m set for the day!

Last adventure: I have been planning to make my mom’s old mulligatawny recipe for a while. I recently saw a blended mulligatawny (just a pic, not the recipe), so I finally got to it. I spotted acorn squash and decided to use it as the base (along with a healthy dose of carrots).

The squash and the carrots gave it some thickness, replacing the roux & cream. I did add the stock it called for, though. Celery, scallions, fresh garlic, pinch of ground cloves, curry spices (pre-blended, not my own blend), diced sweet apple, s&p, couple of bay leaves. It would be nice to still have friends around with laurel trees. I used smoked paprika to replace the smoked pork. All very easy in the slow cooker, and perfect for a chilly night’s meal. I also enjoyed it with brown rice, and once with okra and black-eyed peas (soul food meets Indian, haha). The random garnish (radicchio, scallion, nori) is due to my being rushed to eat. I thought it looked bare for a pic, so that’s what I found (leftovers, lol).

Homemade Peppermint Lip Balm and Cuticle Oil were lovely! I think the cuticle oil would be a great gift for anyone in the medical profession (or any profession that requires a lot of hand washing). Merry Christmas + Cranberry-Orange Mimosas

I wanted to write a blog post simply wishing you all a Merry Christmas (if you celebrate), but I just came across this festive drink recipe. So, bonus for you and me! I think I will make a non-alcoholic version with sparkling juice for Christmas brunch, alongside panettone waffles. I was inspired by the fruit cake/Christmas pudding pancakes for the waffles. Big-time shortcut (as well as a healthier version), with my traditional panettone flavors. I think the waffles + cranberry-orange mimosas sound splendid!

No ham, duck, steak, or goose this year! I think this is my most casual, simple Christmas meal plan to-date: Seafood lasagna, Caesar salad with homemade croutons, 40 Cents No-Knead Bread w/ fresh butter, Christmas Fruit Salad, and wine. My mom is a big sourdough bread lover, so I almost started to make that…but, you know I am La Cashionista. The 40 cents got me! It’s been cold fermenting since Monday, so I’ll see how it turns out. Fingers crossed. I started putting a little annatto in the butter for color. It just seems more appealing to me, haha. I am going to make the lasagna similarly to this, but I’m going to layer vs. roll-up. I have the ricotta made, but the sauce and assembly will be tonight. I thought about preparing the individual Pavlovas with Mascarpone Whipped Cream and Red Wine Cherry Compote again (as I did for Thanksgiving). They were SO GOOD! They will probably show up on my New Year’s table.

I also wanted to share my edible gifts pic (in case you’re still in need of a few last-minute ideas, for gifts or for guests):

Homemade No-Corn Syrup Marshmallows, biscotti, yogurt banana bread, Fruit and Nut Clusters. The lighting wasn’t that great, so it’s hard to tell the marshmallow is pink. I didn’t have light-colored honey, so I compensated by adding a bit of color (otherwise, they would have been tan, lol). I made peppermint & plain. They were fabulous! I had a mind to make some graham crackers, then cover them in chocolate. Moon pie! I refrained (for now). If you are not an avid pastry baker (like myself), biscotti are some of the easiest cookies to prepare, IMO. You can pay quite a bit if you buy them in a shop, but they are relatively inexpensive to make at home. I did choc-pistachio dipped, choc-dipped, and plain vanilla this year. I think my faves are choc-dipped vanilla-almond and white choc-dipped gingerbread. This was the first year I tried yogurt in place of butter for the banana bread, and I could not have been more pleased. It was just as good as the original version.

You could probably use the same technique for an adult-sized petticoat for, say, a vintage circle skirt (or adult tutu).

Adventures in Food: After making the citrus-mirin eggplant spread, I decided to prepare a simpler version of one of my all-time fave dishes: Eggplant Parmigiana Zoodles.

Instead of going through the whole bake-fry process, I just cubed it, then added it to my sauce. I think I’ve prepared this at least a dozen times now, and it’s still going strong. This pic, I prepared the zoodles separately. Many times, I just add them right into the sauce, though. I think I prefer them that way. I did my sauce on the stove, but I think I should make a big slow cooker batch soon (if my cravings continue). Extremely filling without being too heavy. Yums!

I became distracted and almost scorched the forbidden rice. I caught it just in time! This was fab & filling. I only altered it slightly by adding a few raisins while it was cooking (in addition to garnish), just a few mistos of oil, and I threw the carrots and tomatoes in just a couple of minutes before it finished. This can be a super versatile recipe, and you can surely experiment with the veggies you have on hand. Will be making this again soon!

Remember this fancy-dish post: Beetroot-Cured Salmon with Chrain and Herb Salad? While I would love to present this absolutely gorgeous recipe one day, I took the fanciness down a few notches (to my simple level, haha). For my everyday needs, just plain ole bay-goohlz & lahks:

I really liked this change-up from my usual gravad lax recipe. I used rum (as this recipe called for instead of my usual brandy), shredded beets, orange zest, black peppercorns, sea salt, coconut sugar, and basil. I like to weight mine down before placing it in the fridge. Also in this pic is the Rosemary Cranberry Spread from the Pates & Spreads post. I used homemade yogurt cheese for the base. So simple & tasty! I made mini sprouted rye bagels with charnushka (using the NY-Style Bagels recipe) for both. I didn’t have lovage, watercress, or borage flowers for the salad, so I improvised with celery leaves, mint, and toasted walnuts. Yummy! I think I will leave the chrain a bit chunkier next time.

2nd fishy use: Eggs Mornay with Beet-Cured Salmon, Mushrooms, Asparagus, and Chive Oil.

Lighter sauce with skim milk and a wee bit of parm. Sautéed mushrooms and asparagus in the bottom, topped with some sauce, eggs, more sauce, finished with lox, steamed asparagus, and chive oil. If I could have more cheese in my diet, I think I could eat this everyday. Even with a little toast, very satisfying, without being overly heavy.

Last adventure for today: Spicy Sweet Potato-Roasted Apple Soup in a “Pumpkin” Bread Bowl:

I really wasn’t sure how this would turn out, but it wasn’t that bad. The soup part I knew I could handle. Very simple, just baked sweet potatoes, roasted apples & mirepoix (carrots, scallion & leek whites, celery), fresh garlic, chile arbol, nutmeg, few pinches garlic & onion powder (lends a little different profile vs. fresh) few pinches of coconut sugar, a couple of orange segments (at the end, just before blending), water, s&p. I’m not very artistic (even with something as seemingly easy as a pumpkin), so that part made me a little nervy. I think I did OK, considering my lack of talent. I decided to use the bagel dough recipe (without the boiling, just a few spritzes of oil), as it’s a very quick, dense bread. I only made 2 bowls to test it out (1/3 of the recipe, 1 cup of flour w/ 1 TBSP vital wheat gluten). I checked on them after 20 minutes baking time, and they looked just about done. The top of the “stem” was very brown, so I covered it with a piece of foil. They were nicely browned after an additional 5 minutes.

I used sweet potatoes as I prefer them to pumpkin, but pumpkin soup in a “pumpkin” bread bowl is the obvious alternative. The addition of cream would up the luxury factor. I took the bagel dough shortcut, but I know there are all sorts of fab bread recipes out there that would fit the bill. This size bowl is nice for a small app, but you could double it for a main.

Recipes: Pâtés & Spreads

I’ve had a carb-loaded weekend! Breads and 2-for-1 crackers & grissini. Same dough for the crackers and breadsticks, just flavored (and shaped) differently. I love putting together baskets like this, as they’re so quick — the more rustic and imperfect it looks, the better (IMO). People will know you made it with love, anyway 🙂 . 

After making pâtés last week, I decided to keep the spread loving going. This time, all about the veggies. My spreads pic’d here are: Asparagus-Avocado-Mint & Roasted Eggplant w/ Citrus & Mirin. I intended the eggplant to be the Miso and Citrus Glazed Eggplant I posted. If you could tell from previous posts, eggplant is one of my absolute favorite things in the world. So, my eyes always zone in when I see a recipe for it. At the last minute, I decided to take the concept and make it a spread (since I had all these carbs waiting for me!). Eggplant, garlic, onion, fresh orange juice, orange zest, homemade mirin, s&p. The zest really gave it a zippiness. The other was just steamed asparagus, avocado, roasted garlic, s&p, and mint. My mint has really taken off, so that was my starting inspiration for the combo. I wanted to find a few ways to use it (beyond juleps, say, haha). 

As I enjoyed these spreads and pâtés so much, I decided to look up a few more to share with you all. They can be such an easy go-to for guests, or those times when you just don’t feel like a big meal prep. Add a bit of crudite, fruit, or wine perhaps, if you like. And, if you don’t feel like making your own bread, etc., your local bakeries always come in handy. We have several fabulous bakeries here in Tucson. Or, forget the bread/crackers & just slather them on your raw veg.

Recipes: Homemade Wines & Liqueurs

Dishwasher vodka and other homemade liqueur recipes | Mumsnet.

I would like to post a few Valentine’s Day recipes this week (some sweet treats and perhaps some healthier eats), and my thoughts turned towards homemade wines and liqueurs. Then, I thought, I should have posted it several weeks back — most take a bit of time to mature. I found this homemade ‘Dishwasher Liqueur‘ recipe, though, that requires far less time than most. Besides fruit, you can even flavor it with chocolates or candies. Now, again, I was attracted to this method as it seems a bit of a science project, haha. If you are fortunate enough to live in a place that home liquor distillation is allowed (not America), also take a look at my post on Inexpensive Home Water Distillation for more of these types of projects.

Homemade country wines and liqueurs can be great gifts for someone who appreciates them. I think you will know those in your life who will probably only appreciate ones from the wine shop. They can be far less expensive than store-bought, and you get the satisfaction that comes from creating something with your own hands. That’s why I make a lot of things that are readily available in the store. There is the awe and wonder as you watch your raw ingredients transform.

Here are a few other recipes I’ve found. Some call for food coloring, so remember my post on The Many Uses of Food Powders if you want a natural alternative. They don’t have to be in a powdered form, juice from beets, blackberries, etc., work quite well.

— I was extremely busy this past week and could not find the time to blog. So, I will try to let you know some of the things I’ve been up to. But, before we get into all of that, I wanted to express my deepest appreciation to the late Martin Luther King, Jr. and his family. I, like so many others, would have never had the opportunities that have come my way without them. I believe MLK’s legacy has been felt across all of the nations. So, today, we honor that legacy. It encourages one to stand up for what one believes in. Common men and women have sometimes had as great an impact on society as royalty and world leaders (if not greater, in some instances, perhaps).

— You know I love food and often write up all sorts of food-related tidbits on this blog. On this MLK, Jr. Day, I thought it would be cool to showcase a few chefs and recipes from the US and Britain (as you know, I adore British culture & food). Speaking of Britain, have you ever seen the television show Chef? I do not recall when it ran because many times we (the US) receive British programming much later than the original air dates. Perhaps it was from the 90’s…it was such a fab and funny show. I’m sure it’s in some sort of digital format, so check it out if you get the chance.

— Have you ever been under a time crunch and forced to go to places and do things you would rather not? That’s how last week was for me. Sometimes, my whereabouts/locations can make things difficult. I managed to make the Minimalist Entryway Organizer I wrote about. Instead of bungee cords and a wood frame, I went for a solid wood plaque and elastic. I attached the elastic with a staple gun and drilled a hole in the back for hanging. Such a practical idea for your keys, glasses, etc.:

Also, I’m making a shelf, so I stained a cedar board (after power sanding) with a mixture of coffee and black tea (as I wrote about in my post on The Many Uses of Food Powders). I used soybean oil for finishing, but I’m sure you could use any fixed drying oil (like linseed, hemp, walnut, or sunflower). Super easy and inexpensive. The lighting wasn’t great, so I do not think the pic (before and after) does it justice. It’s a rich caramel color — turned out beautifully:

These DIY’s were made by the store staff. The ‘button letter’ would be totally fun in a child’s room. Or, if you have a more eclectic decor, you could probably make it work in any setting (possibly changing up the color scheme). First initials for couples would be a neat idea.

— What have I been eating this past week? Well, I made a few more of the Detox Drinks with a repeat of the Grapefruit-Cado. I forgot to mention that anytime the recipes call for juice, I use whole fruit. It was such a busy week that I didn’t get a chance to make granola bars. Luckily, I found some organic store-bought ones that were wickedly reduced in price. SQUEAL DEAL! They saved me! I always like to carry some sort of snack bar with me when I go out (so I don’t grab at the nearest candy protein bar in a vending machine, haha). And, I had a couple for snacks in place of my (of late) usual nuts, figs, oatmeal & honey, or za’atar roasted chickpeas. I’ve found the chickpeas curb my cravings for sweets (as you know, I have a sweet tooth). I did have time to whip up a quick cream of roasted garlic and white asparagus soup (with olive oil roux & skim milk, finished with a little extra-virgin and chiles):

And, the Sicilian Roasted Potatoes I made for Christmas have made an appearance 4 or 5 times now. Perhaps I will take a pic soon. I’ve started using a mix of baby Yukons and sweet potatoes. Really quite delicious. As I had a lot of running around to do, I made a batch of egg sandwich fillers. I reheat them in the oven or on the stove, but I suppose you could use the micro (not too long, they might get rubbery). I just used leftover veggies and cooked them in oval rings to fit my homemade bagels. I start them on the stove top and then give them a hit under the broiler:

Other than that, I began to have a few heavier meals starting with a yummy hamburger (on a bagel, of course 😉 ) and a side of healthy Brussels and smashed baby Yukons bubble and squeak.

— Remember the DIY Silk Scarf Kaftan I posted? Well, here’s a DIY Kimono Cape along the same lines. While running errands for my mom, I saw someone with a gorgeous kimono fabric. — Has one of your New Year’s Resolutions been to get more organized? I am going to make this ‘minimalist-chic’ entryway organizer. Crafted from a simple wood frame & bungee cords, it’s one of the easiest and most practical projects I’ve seen. As I have a few days to myself, I’m doing a lot of clearing out and re-organizing of things right now. How do you collect so much stuff? I err on the side of ‘pitch it, donate it, or give it to an unsuspecting friend or relative ;)’ if I think an item has fulfilled its purpose in my life. This comes from previously living with a roommate and relatives with “stuff” in every nook they can find — they cannot have an inch of unused space anywhere. I do have a tendency to collect way too many kitchen pieces, though…gadgets, glasses, dishes, etc. Sometimes, I have to force myself to not purchase them. And, speaking of the kitchen, take a look at this link with 50 Clever Ways to Organize Your Pots and Pans.

— The Detox Drinks have been a hit! Since the last ‘My Way‘ post, I’ve also prepared the Natural Daily Detox Remedy, Beet Juice Smoothie, Mango Ginger Lemonade, Detox Smoothie w/ Pineapple, Spinach, & Ginger, Citrus & Green Tea Smoothie (very grapefruit-y, so you’ll have to love grapefruit), Grapefruit-Cado Sunrise Smoothie, and the Detox Beet and Carrot Smoothie. I left the beets and carrots raw in the beet/carrot smoothie instead of steaming them. I added a good handful of cranberries, a 1/4 of a lime, and a tsp. of sweetener, as well. Delish! I realized the Cranberry Pomegranate Detox Juice I linked to from another site is the same as the Red and Green Festive Cocktail on my original post. So far my faves have been the pineapple-spinach-ginger (just needs a little rum — teasing 😉 ), and the Grapefruit-Cado (I added just a little extra banana).

— EATS & DRINKS: Homemade Chili-Garlic Paste, Lentil Meatballs with Lemony Pesto, Cinnamon Whole Grain Power Pancakes, Philly Cheesesteak Stew, Grilled Lobster Tails with Sriracha Butter, Cinnamon-Orange Animal Crackers, Harvest Apple Sangria with Bourbon and Thyme, Nutty Florentine Bars. Also, I want to make a batch of granola bars soon, so I found these low cal treats: Low Cal Almond-Raisin Granola Bars & Low-Fat Banana Pecan Cranberry Granola Bars. I usually do not use a recipe for granola bars, but I wanted to try to control the portions and cal count. There’s not a lot of sense in eating something supposedly healthy if it’s going to have 500 calories per serving, lol.

— I would like to do another WhirlwinDISH post soon, too, but my meals have pretty much been the detox smoothies, salads, bagel sandwiches, and the salmon-Thai coconut soup recipe collision. I saw a recipe for a Salade Niçoise Wrap, so I started craving Niçoise. I put together a simple one with cold roasted veggies and a light vinaigrette. Besides just lettuce and tomato, Niçoise was the first type of salad I ever prepared. It is the reason for my love of cold, salty potatoes.

Pic’d: boiled eggs, roasted turnips, boiled Peruvian potatoes, roasted white asparagus, roasted red bells, roasted golden beets, radishes, roasted rutabagas, grilled marinated artichokes, tuna, toasted walnuts, capers, and black olives. I have never been able to get used to the color of purple potatoes. They came in a mixed bag, and it was the sole boiled potato in the fridge. I subbed asparagus for my normal haricots verts. I need to pick up anchovies, so I had to make-do without them. I added the walnuts because I read they are terrific in upping your serotonin levels.
After posting about How to Eat in Europe on a Budget, I saw a perfect picnic opportunity. What do you do when you have a few days to yourself? Have a “girly” day: an indoor picnic for one, pretend you are in Europe & put on your Maurice Chevalier records, soak in a bubble bath (Homemade Bubble Baths), give yourself a facial (10 Homemade Facial Scrubs), bubbling water spa pedicure, warm hand wax and manicure, deep condition your hair (Homemade Deep Conditioner and Hot Oil Treatment), don your best fluffy ‘hotel-style’ robe and slippers, and turn on your heated back and neck massagers. My picnic included a sandwich inspired by the Pan Bagnat I posted several months back. I stuffed a round mini-loaf with all the same Niçoise toppings except the turnips, rutabagas, and walnuts. I also added a little avocado and raw green bell pepper. Guess what I used for the bread? The bagel recipe, of course! I know you probably think I’m going a little too far with the reshaping the bagels, haha. That super-quick bagel recipe, though, is the next best thing for me since (well, it is sliced bread, so that analogy won’t work)…since Noosa Honey Yogurt, I guess.

And, as I am keeping it alcohol-free for a couple of weeks, I made myself a little kicked up green tea in a flask (it helps with the illusion 😉 ): Green tea, honey, ginger, lemon juice, lemon zest, & red chiles. Who needs bourbon when it’s this good? A set of 2 of these flasks in a nice leather bag came by way of a very good family friend. We lost touch with him for years, and through very miraculous and random circumstances found him again. Anyway, I have him to thank for this lovely picnic memory. I cherished a few pear slices and some sugar & spice frozen cranberries (raw sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves). After the Holidays, I always keep craving cranberry sauce, so this satisfied my need. I think I could eat a whole cup or two in one sitting, I love it so much. A lot less damage this way, with probably less than a 1/4 tsp. of sugar.

— Article: Why Are So Many Drinks Flavored with Honey? Because it’s yummy??? I received honeyed bourbon as a Holiday gift. Yums. This article also includes comparisons between honey, agave, xylitol, and stevia. What about maple? Maple bourbon is good, too. Scratch my earlier statement about the green tea…maple bourbon might be all the world ever needed.

— Made any New Year’s resolutions? Gonna get fit, stop smoking, treat your spouse better, cut down on coffee, etc? I must admit I do not make them, but I think it’s a good idea. It’s always a good idea to set goals (IMO), but I tend to set them at random times throughout the year. My mini-goal for this week is to eat plenty of salads (in addition to the juices I posted) to help cleanse from Holiday foods. As salads are one of my fave things to eat, I don’t see it as some sort of post-Holiday self-torture. Here’s a list of 10 Homemade Salad Dressings (nothing exotic or fancy, just everyday dressings).

— So sorry, I found a lot of typos in the last ‘My Way’ post. I usually find something after I post, but there were quite a few. My eyes can get tired after staring at text for so long. It doesn’t help when the writer is also the editor, lol. I’m sure you will be patient with my mistakes in the future (pretty please?). Thanks for understanding.

— Are you a DIY cook? Take the quiz. It’s from a British site, so some of the questions may be geared a little more towards British culture. I am more of a DIY cook if I have decent space to work in, proper equipment, and accessibility to certain foods (and am not pressed/stressed for time). I am good with space, equipment, and food accessibility (for the most part) right now, but I have had limited resources in the past. In those instances, I tend to rely more on pre-packaged or store-bought items. And, sometimes I buy items that are perhaps better homemade, but they are ‘familiar’ or convenient (items I grew up with a lot of the time). I think many people do that…familiarity can bring comfort sometimes.

— Speaking of familiarity, I was telling my mom I find it odd that companies that sell a lot of processed food (many times not very wholesome) also sell medicine. So, it’s like…after you become sick from eating their unhealthy foods, you can purchase their medicine. And, stores that market a lot of processed and junk foods also have pharmacies. Once you become ill from what you’ve eaten, you can get prescriptions to help you feel better. That’s really one-stop shopping!

— I am not the best at gardening, etc., as I grew up with other folks taking care of things like that. My weeds were getting out of control, so someone gave me a recipe for homemade weed killer: 1 gallon of water, 1 cup of salt, 2 cups of vinegar, and 2 TBSP dish soap. I used this for a while, and it works well. I saw a gentleman just sprinkling salt on his weeds, so I just recently tried that. It rained right afterwards, so I thought all my work had gone to pot. It worked beautifully, though! A great alternative to traditional methods.

— My Holidays were filled with lots of cooking, baking, jam making, and pickling. I made the potatoes recipe I posted for Christmas and absolutely loved it. It was super simple. It had a mixture of tomatoes and olives (which are, of course, faves of mine), but I would have never thought to add raisins. Really different and tasty! I also made a few loaves of the bagel/baguettes as gifts and decided at the last minute to make biscotti. As I’ve said, I don’t bake a lot of confections, but biscotti is fairly easy. I usually just make almond biscotti dipped in chocolate, but I added dried cranberries and orange zest this time (sans chocolate). I took a pic on my kitschy vintage Christmas platter (I inherited it from my step-family, lol). Isn’t Santa cute?

I made individual panettone to help with portion control. I baked some in ‘soup cans’ lined with parchment paper. I used homemade candied citrus peel (with citrus from my grandmother’s tree), dark and golden raisins, and dried cranberries. I was a little heavy-handed with the dried fruit. I used a bagel/baguette for the crostini, so it saved a lot of time. I think I will have to make poviticas another time. I’ve had my fill of heavy foods for now, haha.

— I love to work with wood and collect pieces as I find them. A pallet is ideal for a lot projects, and this link gives a few pointers on disassembling one without injuring yourself.

— Someone gave me a pair of jeans that do not fit, so I’m trying to come up with a way to up-cycle them. I found this link, so I thought I would share it. I particularly like the flip flops, iPad cover, and crop top ideas.
